Local Resident’s Idea Turns into Reality

CHARLOTTE, NC 7/14/2010

The National Wildlife Federation recently approved Wilora Lake Lodge, a Brookdale Senior Living independent and assisted care community in Charlotte, N.C., to be a Certified Wildlife Habitat Establishment.

A resident and her son, who works for NWF, told the staff about the idea and the word began to spread about the new project. The son took on the role of letting other residents know about the opportunity, and the idea began to turn into a real project. Residents raised money to assist in the purchase of materials, such as bushes, trees, bird baths and feeders. A committee was formed to organize a plan to get the process done.

"All of our hard work and dedication has turned into a beneficial gift for the residents, our local wildlife, and the greater community," said Tracey Sloop, executive director at Wilora Lake Lodge. "It’s a joy to see the residents get together and work for a purposeful activity."
